Software Engineer III (Java, Kafka, Kubernetes, Microservices)

Senior Java backend engineer for JPMorganChase CIB to design, build, and troubleshoot secure, scalable microservices and event-driven systems. Must have strong production experience with Java 8+, Spring Boot REST APIs, Apache Kafka, Kubernetes, CI/CD, databases, testing, and distributed-system resiliency, plus demonstrated secure coding (OWASP) and ability to produce architecture/design artifacts. Role requires enterprise/regulated environment background and hands-on use of enterprise-authorized AI coding assistants with responsible AI practices and validation via peer review and automated testing.

Essential

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (B.E./B.Tech/MCA) in CS/IT/engineering or formal software engineering certifications (Oracle/AWS/Microsoft/equivalent)

5+ years hands-on applied software engineering experience in large corporate/enterprise (regulated preferred)

Java (4+ years) production-grade: Java 8+, multithreading, collections, JVM tuning, design patterns

Spring Boot

REST API development

Apache Kafka (3+ years): producers/consumers, topics/partitions, offset management, Kafka Streams, fault-tolerant messaging

Kubernetes (3+ years): pods, deployments, services, configmaps, secrets, HPA, RBAC, cluster troubleshooting

Microservices architecture (3+ years): service mesh, API gateway, sync/async communication, resilience patterns

CI/CD & DevOps (3+ years): at least two of Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, ArgoCD; automated build/test/deploy

Databases (3+ years): SQL and/or NoSQL; query optimization, stored procedures, schema design, indexing

Secure coding & application security: OWASP Top 10, secure code reviews, vuln remediation, security-by-design

System design & architecture: architecture/design artifacts for distributed HA systems

Agile/Scrum (3+ years): sprint planning, backlog grooming, retrospectives, cross-functional collaboration

Application resiliency: circuit breakers, retries, bulkheads, graceful degradation

Unit & integration testing (3+ years): JUnit 5, Mockito, TestContainers (or equivalent); TDD; 80%+ coverage enforcement

Enterprise-authorized AI-assisted development (2+ years): named tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor AI) with critical validation

Responsible AI use: data sensitivity, secure handling of prompts/outputs, guiding peers on safe AI usage

Experience must be from large corporate/enterprise or regulated financial services (not exclusively startup/freelance)

Cloud experience: AWS (EKS, MSK, RDS, S3, IAM) and/or Azure/GCP

Cloud certifications (AWS Solutions Architect/Developer Associate or above)

Running Kafka on Kubernetes via Strimzi Operator or Confluent Operator

Frontend familiarity: React, Angular, or Vue.js

Financial services / capital markets / investment banking / payments domain experience

GraphQL API design and development

Observability/monitoring: Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus (or equivalent)

Exposure to ML/AI platform development or data engineering pipelines

Scaled agile (SAFe or equivalent)
