IBM i (IBMi/AS400) Senior Architect & Modernization Expert (OS Migration, Security, Observability, DevOps)

Senior IBM i expert contractor to co-lead an IBM i platform transformation and OS migration (V7R4/V7R5 to V7R6). The role combines architecture, modern IBM i development (RPG IV Full Free/ILE/APIs), and platform control (security hardening/auditing plus observability with Grafana/ELK). You will run impact analyses and migration strategy (failover/rollback), define target architecture and development standards, introduce DevOps tooling (Git/ARCAD/Jenkins), and coach product teams through best practices, documentation, and workshops while ensuring performance, availability, and resilience.

Responsibilities

What You'll Be Doing.

In-depth proficiency in IBM i (V7R4, V7R5 and knowledge of V7R6).

Proven experience with major IBM i OS migrations (impact analysis, failover strategy, rollback plan).

Expertise in security (clearance management, hardening, auditing), observability and supervision (Grafana, ELK or equivalent).

Good understanding of the performance, availability and resilience issues of IBM i platforms.

Expertise in RPG IV Full Free, ILE, APIs, modularity and IBM i software architecture.

Proficiency in DB2 for i, advanced SQL, stored procedures and performance optimization (QAQQINI, indexing, SQL tuning).

Definition and implementation of development standards, best practices and target architectures.

Knowledge of DevOps practices and IBM i tools (Git, ARCAD, Jenkins or equivalent).

Technology watch on IBM i modernization: AI, automated testing, Open Source and APIs.

Technical leadership and management of cross-functional projects.

Ability to define an architecture vision and modernization roadmap.

Excellent communication, change management and skills transfer skills.

IBM i security: authorization/clearance management, system hardening, auditing/compliance

Observability/monitoring/supervision on IBM i (Grafana, ELK or equivalent)

IBM i performance/availability/resilience understanding

RPG IV Full Free expertise

ILE concepts: procedures, modules, service programs; modular architecture

API design/usage on IBM i

DB2 for i expertise: advanced SQL, stored procedures, SQL services

Performance optimization on DB2 for i (indexing, QAQQINI, execution plan analysis, SQL tuning)

Define/enforce development standards (coding standards, Clean Code, code reviews, best practices)

DevOps practices for IBM i (version control, CI/CD, automation)
